Dear Intermediatees,

Here is a hand from real life play on BBO (if such a thing is possible):

x
AK10x
xxxxxx
Kx

AQx
J98
Kx
QJ9xx

All vulnerable. west opened 2S (weak), north bid 3D, east bid 3S and south bid 3NT. All passed.

West led the jack of spades. How would you play?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

If east does not play the king I will duck trick one, then play on clubs before taking the heart hook.

This hand may have been too hard, it's certainly not a hand from a book with a perfect solution.

The thought of ducking the first trick is interesting, but I think we should reject it. Given the opening lead west probably has 6 spades and east 3. Therefore there is not much upside for ducking trick 1. However, if LHO has led a spade from KJ10xxx then ducking could be very costly. LHO could switch to the minor suit ace of RHO and RHO could play a spade through. Not only would we have lost a spade trick, we would also have lost a tempo.

So let's say we take trick 1 with the queen, what then? Why should we follow Bill's suggestion and play on clubs?

The hand continues:

Good hand to practice for not making sloppy plays.

What if LHO secretly had 3 diamonds, any hope in that case?

Perhaps this was not the right forum for this hand, apologies.

In real life LHO had a 6-1-3-3 distribution with J10x of diamonds. I believe the 10 may have been systemic but I didn't realize that at the time.

No watter, if you play a heart to dummy's ace and exit in diamonds, LHO will win and has to play a club or spade. By not cashing the spade you lose nothing but gain here.

(actually, LHO had the stiff queen of hearts so nothing mattered)
