West's 5C bid was insane, what did he think 4C would have meant?
But to be honest I'd have bid a slam as East opposite a positive with club support. I'm not sure what East's 5H was supposed to achieve, doesn't 5D look like a more obvious call?

I think West should have been more aggressive/less obtuse; it's remotely possible to construct an East hand where EW have two quick losers, but not very likely. Plus, as Frances says, the 5C bid is confusing and unnecessary. That being said I place much more blame on East; how can s/he not drive to slam with this hand opposite a heart positive and club fit? I'd sooner shoot 7 than bid a nonforcing 5. I suspect that's the root of the problem, East probably thought 5H was forcing, and we know what West thought. But making that kind of bid opposite a pickup partner is asking for trouble.

I was East, and I did think 5♥ was forcing - I was trying to show the ♥K, thinking since we'd agreed clubs it should be a cue. I knew that the ♥K was probably the card partner would most like to know I had. If I had bid 5♦, should West bid 7?

IF this is a cue, you denied a a DIAMOND cue on your way, so 5 ♥ is plain wrong. Besides this: Why couldn't it show the double fit?
For missing the slam: I dislike 5 club, even bidding 7 ♣ directly will be imps positive compared to 5 ♣. But why not a simple 4 ♣?
But East was at fault too: As explained, 5 ♥ was wrong, 6 club enough and esy to understand.

Luckily East opened that 20 hcp hand with 2C ...
It gave the best chance to get to the ♣ slam.
And if East does the RKC-ask, he doesn't know if West has a 6 card ♥ suit or just 5.
So, he can't count a sure 13 ahead of time for the grand in ♣ .

bidding 4♣ is ridicoulous, you have an obvious 4♦ wich shows support and also shows a control for the same price.
