MP's

What do you open with this?
We had following options:
- 1
- 3=gambling 3NT (3 is not really 3NT, but same meaning :) )
- 2...3=GF with
- 3NT=preempt or
- 5 to play

If you start with 1 then it goes:
1-(P)-1-(2)
??

..or at another table it was..
1-(P)-1-(3)
??

I open 3 describes my hand with one bid. I would rather not have the K but well nobody is perfect.

Having opened 1, I would bid 3 in the first case and 4 in the second. If I am doing bad I might gamble 3N in the second one.

i would start with 1d

gambling 3n weirdly makes it too easy to bid 3n
and might cause many slams to be missed. It does
have the advantage of being preemptive (but to whom)

after 1d p 1s 2h
I would gamble a 3h bid.

after 1d p 1s 3h
I would trot out 4d and hope
their preempt didnt kill us

This were NS hands and the bidding
MP's

2 was bid at our table by a beginner. He had a weak hand with 7c.
Lead was A followed by a small for the K.
A 3th was played and ruffed small and overruffed.
5 would make if ruffed high because LHO had KJTx and A

If W doesn't raise on a 3 card suit headed by the Ace, some bells should be ringing imo. Unnecessary ruffing high still works when trumps split 3-2, a fair chance imo.
