then someone popped my bubble and pointed out the decimal place.

Here's one of the hands, IMP, NV

Do you agree with my first 2 passes?

(I managed to give only one lesson at the sectional today :) )

So you play (1) 1 (P) P (2) 2 as a full reverse?

I play 2s as showing a decent hand and would bid 3s as a passed hand.

I think I have a max hand for 3s over 2s as I have passed 1h.

so a full reverse no, if so then I have at least a 4s bid.

No. I raise to 3s the previous round. Partner forced to the three level opposite no spade fit. I should be allowed to go there freely with a fit and a few values.

I'd bid 3 at previous round.

Yep, I erred by not bidding 3 at first chance.

What is the difference between (1) 1 (P) P; 2 2 and (1) 1 (P) P (2) X (P) 2 (3) 3 ?

Double is more flexible. Something like 4=5=1=3 would be a typical perfect hand.

Therefore 2 typically has less tolerance for the unbid suit. 4=6 in the majors or even 5=6 are possible depending on your range for Michaels.

The precise parameters for these bids is open to some partnership discussion and or individual style.

There must be something wrong with me, I don't see why people aren't just bidding 1 in the first round of bidding.

Probably related to what I just said, in my mind 2 definitely shows a strong hand, and given that I passed last round, I now bid 3 if I think partner will take that as a spade raise, else 4.

Of course this depends to some extent on your requirements for double-and-bid, which for me are probably rather high compared to what most people play.

(Disclaimer: I don't even know whether 209 silver points is a lot.)

1 can be made on as few as 6 points, I'm don't want to introduce a new suit with my Kxxx,xx,Jxx,Kxxx

OK... so I just don't appreciate the sheer terror of playing at the 1-level non-vulnerable when opponents have 27 HCP (i.e. a game) sufficiently. Guess I'll have to work on that. ;)

Why do you want to bid 1? The maximum for partner is irrelevant, he doesn't ever have a maximum anyway (though personally I would always double-and-bid with a hand that likes to be in game opposite a balanced 7 count with xx support). What matters is the kind of hand partner typically has - say, a balanced 11 count. Then 1 is a pretty good contract, definitely much better than anything 1 will get you into (whether you play it as forcing or non-forcing).

I don't think 2 promises a very strong hand, with shape unsuitable for a takeout double you still have to compete. Nevertheless, I would bid 4 - partner does need something to force to the 3-level opposite no known fit, I can't see a hand where we don't have play for game.

fwiw, I bid 3 and that is where we played, making 3. Partner had a 16or17 point 45xx hand.

And where is the decimal point.

I would have offered a simple raise on the previous round. The hand is worth that and no more.

Then he should have doubled in the second round, instead of 2.
