By the way, do you know the entire hand? I wonder if there is a one-suit squeeze.

I do. When I get back to my apartment tonight I'll post it.

(I don't know how to use the really cool hand display gadget here. If you do, I'd appreciate a PM with a primer. Thanks!)

That'a a good response in general. (Here, it's a lie, alas: the 10 stands out.)

If the person who needed to find the play were the one asking, I would consider it a request for a lesson, and explain to them how to recognize the situation.

But in this case, since it was their partner you have to be diplomatic. Which may entail a white lie.

Excellent points all around.

By using modifiers such as 'maybe', 'sometimes', etc you can make it a non-lie in practice. ;)
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Never give a lesson unless you are asked.
Here, you were asked, so you answer.
After that answer from your LHO, just move on the next board. You can't say anything useful now without either lying or sounding unpleasant.

Such good advice! There are a few players I know who would benefit from heeding it.

I think you handled the situation exactly correctly: you gave a direct, truthful and instructive answer to the specific question you were asked (I hate the "tell a white lie" suggestions), and then you refrained from making the smart-ass continuation that some of us would have made. If RHO is sufficiently interested in learning, he may look at the hand (the actual cards, in the actual board, like in the old days) at the end of the session.

The one who asked the question was NOT the one who was supposed to make the lead in question.

I understand. If RHO wants to learn, he can look at the hand, having been told what to look at/for. No need to drag LHO into it.
