This is one of the areas where the INV+ relay method works better than FNT. With a weak hand and long diamonds the bidding goes 1 - 2; 2 - 3. With an invitational hand and long diamonds it is 1 - 1NT; 2 - 3. Given the methods I think you either have to play 3 as weak and bid 2NT with the invitational hand or to just give up on the weak hand altogether and pick a major when you hold it.

If you have a diamond splinter, you are very likely to
have a spade fit as well.
