This is one of the areas where the INV+ relay method works better than FNT. With a weak hand and long diamonds the bidding goes 1♠ - 2♦; 2♥ - 3♦. With an invitational hand and long diamonds it is 1♠ - 1NT; 2♦ - 3♦. Given the methods I think you either have to play 3♦ as weak and bid 2NT with the invitational hand or to just give up on the weak hand altogether and pick a major when you hold it.

Fit Jump, heart support and 5 diamonds.
If you have a diamond splinter, you are very likely to
have a spade fit as well.
