agree, and now I will bid 1. I will jump in diamonds next hopefully.

I'll gamble a bit and try 4D. It's unilateral, but is what feels right to me...

I would splinter probably. 4C seems about right as a passed hand. While it can be right to play in spades, its sufficiently rare that I dont mind giving it up.

Having said that, I ususally play unbalanced diamonds, which obviously affects things.

I felt the same way, and this is the action I chose at the table. I will wait a little while before I reveal the result.

What is this overwhelming need to bury the spade suit and take partner out of the picture? 4 has some rationale if we were w/r, but we are at adverse vulnerability.

The only good thing that can happen to 4 is we job them into 4 and rip it, assuming partner doesn't bid 5 1st.

The rationale is opps will have a hard time finding their best fit, clubs. I would not be amazed if, should they bid over 4D, then end up in 4H or even 4S!!

not sure what is worse about splinter, shadding spade fit, or alerting opponents of the break when they play the hand.

They're not playing the hand - I won't let them :)

My reasoning, at any rate, was based on an at-the-table belief that the likelihood of any strain other than diamonds being best was quite small, particularly in light of the double. Of course RHO doesn't always have four spades for the double, but he often will. And even if we do have a spade fit, I thought there might be a decent chance it would play better in diamonds from partner's side with the lead coming from the doubler. As far as taking partner out of the picture, I'm not sure how bad a position we are putting partner in by telling him we have a huge diamond fit. Doesn't that leave him in a better position if, say, LHO bids 4H or 5C?

All that being said, of course I considered 1S (along with 4D and 2NT, my other candidates--I did not consider the splinter). I thought it was a close decision and could be convinced that my choice wasn't best.

I don't mind burying the spade suit (they have a 11+ club fit if we have a spade fit, or it's a huge double-fit hand), but I do mind making a preemptive bid with an invitational hand.
