Hi all !

I hope this topic was not totally covered previously, I tried a search but just some bits and pieces came out, so I figured a brand new thread would make things clearer.

If indeed this is redundant, I apologize in advance
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The question is

2D-(2Y)-?
2D-(3Y)-?
2D-(4Y)-?
2D-Dbl -?

The following assumes that 2D is NOT only a weak 2, but encompasses also at least one strong option.
In my case the only strong option is 17-20 hcp, any 4441.

Question 1- The practical question (Multi 2D overcalled "for dummies")

What are the "standard" agreements ?
E.g. if you meet a random player and you are forced to play Multi 2D (wdoes not matter if u like it or not :P ) including weak 2 and strong 4441, and you have no time to discuss the overcalled multi 2D responses, what are the implicit agrements you assume ?
I know there is some material on web pages, and I hav veiwed the approach suggested by Chris Ryall, but I don't know if this one cane be asume as the "standard undiscussed" agreements

case A
2D-(2Y)-?
what does it mean if you bid
- 2Z
- 2NT
- 3Z new suit up the line
- 3Z = jump new suit
- 3NT
- 4Z = single jump new suit
- 4Z = double jump new suit
- 3Y = cuebid
- 4Y = jump cue
- Double

Case B
2D-(3Y)-?
what does it mean if you bid
- 3Z new suit up the line
- 3NT
- 4Z = new suit up the line
- 4Z = single jump new suit
- 4Y = cuebid
- Double

case C
2D-(4Y)-?

what does it mean if you bid
- 4Z = new suit up the line
- 4NT
- 5Y = cuebid
- Double

case D
2D-Dbl -?
what does it mean if you bid
- 2Z
- 2NT
- 3Z new suit up the line
- 3Z = jump new suit
- 3NT
- 4Z = single jump new suit
- 4Z = double jump new suit
- 3Y = cuebid
- 4Y = jump cue
- ReDouble

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question 2- The theoretical question (Multi 2D overcalled "for smart guys")

Which is the approach you like most to respond to 2D multi overcalled with the given constraints (weak 2 or strong 4441) ?

What are the followups in the sequence I listed above ? Thanks !! :-)

case A
2D-(2H)-?
what does it mean if you bid
- 2S = bidding partners presumed suit to play
- 2NT = lebenhsohl
- 3Z = forcing
- 3Z = presumed fit, preemptive (this has to be 3S)
- 3NT = to play
- 4Z = fit jump for spades... showing this suit and spades, good values
- 4Z = To play, this has to be 4. I play this as MY SUIT, not partners
- 3Y = tell me what you have
- 4Y = not sure
- Double = TAKEOUT... of course, if partner has hearts weak or even 4 hearts and 4441 he can pass....

Case B
2D-(3Y)-?what does it mean if you bid
- 3Z = if diamonds, forcing, if hearts or spades, pass/correct
- 3NT - to play
- 4Z = nonleaping michaels
- 4Z =with jump to 4S/4H = this is my suit, you pass unless 4441 strong
- 4Y = bid your weak two major...
- Double = takeout, if partner bids 3 major that is his suit, weak hand.

case C
2D-(4Y)-?
what does it mean if you bid
- 4Z = if major to play
- 4NT = unusual, two suit takeout to the five level.
- 5Y = slam try, support both majors
- Double = takeout (partner will bid his major with any weak two hand)

case D
2D-Dbl -?what does it mean if you bid
- 2Z = 2h/2s as if no double
- 2NT = lebehnshol
- 3Z = forcing in minor, pass/correct in major
- 3NT = four-four in major or better
- 4Z = useless in a minor the way you play 2D, although could be fragment showing short in other minor
- 4Z = In major, this is to play THIS IS MY SUIT and i don't care about your major
- ReDouble = value showing, but i use next double as takeout as well. Partner will bid his major over the redouble in theory.. this is not to play 2Dxx

how to respond if multi can be 4441 or weak two? Welll, if you are asking my opinion, it would be don't do that.......
but... i will take a shot considering i don't play this way, take this with grain of salt.....

2h/2s/3h/3s = pass correct
2NT = ask, 3C=weak h, 3D = weak S, 3H = strong H, 3S = strong S, 3N = 4441 short club, 4C = 4414 short d, 4D = 4144 short heart, 4H=1444 short spade
3NT = to play
4C = transfer to 4H
4D = transfer to 4S
4H/4S = to play

Ben, 1st of all ty a lot for the anwer to question 1

As far as question 2 is concerned, I think I was not clear enough (the chaotic and verbose poster = myself, strikes again  )

Question 1 and question 2 are basically the same, e.g.:

Assume in both case you play Multi 2D as weak 2 or strong 4441.
Both in question 1 and question 2, 2D is overcalled

Question 1
What is the "standard" set of responses with a pickup partner, undiscussed agrements

Question 2
What is your favourite set of responses if you have time to agree them with pard (e.g. can be NON-std)
As in question 1, the problem involves responding after overcalls at 2-3-4 level and double.

I would see as standard:

2D (2M) dbl = pass or correct

2D (2H) 2S = I know what major you have and will bid it now
(I would never bid that, better to play this as a minor suit 1-suiter NF)

2D (2NT and higher) dbl = PENALTY. Partner preempted and after preempt dbl is penalty.

2D (dbl) pass = Unless you are short in D I want to play 2Dx
2D (dbl) rdbl = Want to play 2Dxx and maybe double someone later

Other bids as without interference so 2NT strong inquiry and so on.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do!
