A hand from our club tonight:

Left opens 1

Partner says 1NT (15-17)

Right passes

I'm sitting with 5 4 4

Is this a good spot for 2 (stayman) with the intend to pass everything?

On the one hand I don't like 1NT with the club renonce. On the other hand, there is a big chance partner will end in 2 with a bad spread against him.

How strong is the hand? I wouldn't be too worried about leaving partner in 2 since partner will usually have a diamond stop and LHO may only have 3 cards in diamonds.

I did a simulation and opposite 15-17 hcp with 4333, 4432, 5332 or 5422 (but not a five-card major).

Partner had 4450 with seven or fewer points.

Over 55% of the time opener had a four-card major.

Less than 10% of the time there was no fit. The 5=2 fit could still play better than 1NT.

The numbers were almost the same when i removed the 5422 hands from the simulation.

I don't think you need to worry about the possibility of no fit.

Hi,

2C is a good bid, even when you dont have a 8 card fit, and they break 4-2,
p will know in advance, that this is a real possibility and can cater for
this at trick 1.

Thank you very much for your replies, even though I forgot to include my High Card Points. I had 5 points in the hand.

In the actual hand there was no fit and we landed in 2-1 with a 5-1 against us. But I understand that is basically bad luck, so this shouldn't keep me from bidding this again next time a similar situation occurs.

most likely your partner should have made a takeout double of 1 rather than overcalling 1nt. assuming p has 3+ diamonds here is fairly safe.

wank, with a 3-2=2=6 shape 15-17, would you X? Or even 3=3=2=5?

The 5-1 break was bad luck, but could your partner have made 1NT?
If 1NT is also down, 2D-1 is the same or better as 1NT-?
