Easy pass...why would I want to play 4♦ here assuming PD has AKQxxxx♦ like he's supposed to and not something like AKJxxxx♣? Perhaps 3NT can make.

Ah - looks like I was resulting then. I didn't think partner's Q98 was a good enough stop (well it wasn't here at least!).

That merely shows how stupid the gambling 3NT is if you actually want to make a contract rather than preempt opponents and vulnerable against not is definitely one of those cases. East should have just bid 1♦ especially since 4H might be a make.

Swap opponents' hands and 3NT makes when 4♦ goes off. Give opener some random hand with 7 solid diamonds and I think 3NT has a much better chance of making than 4♦. Of course when 3NT doesn't make it goes about 3 off so perhaps the form of scoring makes a difference.
