Sectional open pair
1S+1

I sat N, I felt not comfortable with that hand after opp open 1, either I had to overcall 1NT w/o stopper or I had to X with T4 in. My partner also felt his hand was too weak to balance. We ended up in defending 1, they made 2 while 5 was cold for us.(The result was 19% for us on this hand)

Would you bid differently with our hands?

Your pass was correct, your partner is supposed to balance with a double.

P - P - 1 - P
P - X - P - 2
P - 3 - P - P
P

might be one auction. Maybe N should raise to 4, maybe E should bid a forcing 1nt and leave in 2, maybe W bids 2 over the double.

J93 isn't a horrible fake stopper to go with, but I would pass that hand.

Ah okay. I was wondering if it's possible to find 5 after the 1 opening.

Not sure what the best way would be to bid it after the reopening X. It's possible to get to 5D with aggressive views, but I would think that my partner often had 2 spades and would probably end up going low with mbodells auction. It is matchpoints and I wouldn't wanna hang partner for getting us in there. It's a tough hand, but going plus on these types of hand is usually above average even if you don't get the max plus. I mean, -110 was 19 %, hard to imagine +150 not being reasonable. Maybe some people overcall 1N, maybe some people get +100 against spades, whatever, +150 is usually fine on a hand like this.

Just noticed west has a 2H bid over 1S p p X, that makes the auction even harder to predict. Maybe 1S p p X 2H 2S (?), then maybe east competes to 3S, and maybe north finds the courage to rip it? Who knows, it's too tough to predict what the opps will do.

To me this is like a bread and butter matchpoint type hand, lots of competitive decisions possible. Selling out to 1S with the south hand is a huge error, south should realize he has protection from partner going crazy since he's a passed hand, and he's a near max hand with a stiff spade, so he can protect.

I agree with the above.

On a related note, I was a little surprised you didn't bid 1NT with the hand you presented before under "gave away too many tricks". That hand seems like a textbook 1NT overcall to me.

Hi,

Your p should reopen.
In the passout seat, a popular agreement is, that p is allowed to borrow a king from you,
if he does, he has 12HCP, spade shortage, hence enough to make a T/O.
Of course, if you have the agreement, than facing a T/O from a player in the passout seat,
you need to subtract a king from your holding.

Regarding your hand - I know player, who would make a T/O with your hand, and others, that
would pass.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: A possible auction

(1S) - Pass - (Pass) - X (1)
(2H (2)) - X (3) - (2S) - 3D (4)
all pass

(1) T/O
(2) given the 5-5 hand, I would bid 2H
(3) depends on agreement, ..., some play this still as T/O
(4) 5 card suit
With kind regards

Am I the only one considering an unusual 2NT by north? Dishonest about shape I know, but the suit quality tempts me.

I like the N hands pass, South should balance with double is pretty clear. I see no reason why playing in a pairs game you want to reach 5D. My bet is no one in the room bid 5D and also had an above average overall score.

It depends on how much you like carrying kicking and screaming partners :)
