Others seem to be able to link a URL within a post, and rename it just fine.
I tried the Google suggestion by first writing a title, then highlighting it and inserting the url. The result seems to be an inaccessible page.
Can someone be so kind as to suggest a proper sequence?

Use the 'insert link' button when creating a topic or post.Any name. It will ask for the name of the page and the words you want seen.

And when I bring up the link, it tells me IE cannot display the webpage. There must be another step somewhere I am missing.

agua, the link button "helpfully" starts you off with "http://". That's useful if you're typing in a link (say, to bridgewinners.com), but less than helpful if you're copying in a link (which has the http:// already - like this *broken* link to your first post). You have to clear it out to get the link copy to work (like this link).
