I am pretty sure that when I learned(?) bridge by reading Goren in 1961 the auction was forcing. Charlie didn't mess around with a lot of gimmicks. But we all get dealt six spades with an 11 count, and six spades with a 14 count. The folks on this thread who play the auction as forcing all (I believe all) have another way to handle the 11 point situation.

Yes, in Goren's day almost all jumps were strong. That was the time when 1S-3S was the game forcing raise.

Goren's bidding style is mostly irrelevant these days.

I learned to play 3S as invitational from Modern American Bidding by Eric Kokish.

Would bid 2D=4SF with values for game.

Not saying that's standard.
