I try to write and nothing happens, it makes me seem rude to my partners. What should I do to change matters?

Hi Eaglewoman, welcome to the forum!

You enter the chat text on the chat line and it appears there but when you hit <Enter>, it does not appear in table chat? Are you sure you have directed it to "Table"?

You would need to provide more details. Are you using the web client or the downloadable client, which browser are you using?

Providing a screen shot might be helpful.

I have a question for you.

Why does that make you seem rude to your partners?

One of my pet peeves is the obligatory "wdp" or similar, especially after making a routine contract or, even worse, after an opponent's error lets a contract make.

In my opinion, the "wdp" when nothing special has happened is either meaningless noise or is an indication that making a routine contract is an achievement for that player (which is more insulting that silence).

When a "wdp" comes out after an opponent's error allows a contract to make, it is insulting to the opponents.

I have asked my partners not to chat at the table. When the round is over, there can be chat, public or private.

I completely agree with you about "wdp". However, not answering a question would certainly seem rude.

Yes, not answering a question would appear rude. That should not be a problem.

Of course, if the question pertains to a bridge issue, it should not be answered to the Table - it should be answered to the opponent or the opponents.

When a new partner joins the table and says "SAYC and standard carding, p?", he should get an answer.

When I meet someone at the bridge table I say "How are you?" or something similar. It does not mean anything much, it is a pleasantry.

Saying "wdp" to partner is a pleasantry, being polite, and opponents who do not like it are being silly. Good manners help in this world.

To my mind one of the main problems with "wdp" is the tendency to say it when partner makes (or defeats) a contract and in the process concedes 10 IMPs (or secures 2% of the MPs).
The converse applies with the "gto" comment to an opponent who goes down in a contract for a better than average score (to the opponent).

I do not regard it as "being polite" to make a comment calculated to irritate.
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

Today, CHO and I got to 6N, after my RHO (holding AQJTx and A) had overcalled 1. RHO doubled 6N and LHO led a to A. RHO continued Q to establish the rest of his suit while he still had A as an entry. Unfortunately for him, I cashed 11 minor-suit tricks after taking K. Yes, I think CHO's "wdp" was rude.

It's not very pleasant if partner took an inferior line but made his contract anyway due to two gross defensive mistakes.
