EW got 450 in this deal (dealer: W, everyone NV). Can you guess how (contract and maybe also the auction)? Environment: late night BBO team match.

Funny, it's hard to imagine an auction to 4 or 5 spades which gets North to lead a diamond and then play another diamond when in with clubs. Hm, maybe he played club ace and then a low club...

I'll guess 2♠-p-4♠-4NT-p-5♣-dbl-5♦-p-p-5♠-p-p-p.

N/S 4♠-9?

I'm not going to take a stab at that auction, but it looks like north psyched, maybe 3S, after west passed. Unfortunately I don't see how they get to 4S, and surely NS can take a club trick. I don't see any way for EW to take more than 12 tricks without serious errors on the part of the defense.

I can't think of any doubled or redoubled contracts worth 450, so the only alternatively to E/W playing spades seems to be N/S going down 9 undoubled.

Another more boring possibility:

4S E +1 on a heart lead. Maybe the auction was P P 1C 2N; 3H P 4S AP

Getting a good -9 undoubled contract for NS seems tough, as usually East will double. I wonder about something ridiculous like 3S P 4S 5S; AP, but that requires it to be so late night that North fell asleep (or was assuming the opponents were psyching and partner was in on it?) in addition to South bidding crazily.

I know what the answer to this is (I was partnering Gwnn on the other table). Your 3S P 4S 5S is getting closer to what happened :). If you want another hint, mtvesuvius had this bid as his sig for a while (long gone now)

Hard to believe 4NT could go down 9.

Seems like it would have to be at least 5♠ or 5NT to have a chance at going down 9.
