defaults for doubles takeout, cards, penalty

No. The fact that some hands are suitable for both actions doesn't mean that the two definitions are equivalent, or that all hand that qualify for one also qualify for the other. If they opened 3♦ showing hearts, I would show a takeout double of hearts with AQxx x Kxx QJxxx, but I wouldn't show a penalty double of diamonds.

Similarly, if I had xx xx KQ10xx Axxx I'd show a penalty double of diamonds, but not a takeout double- of hearts.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
