Contract is 6♠. Partner leads Ace♦.
I play Queen♦. Does this ask for switch to higher suit ♥ or
does it say to continue ♦?

Without agreements I would just take the Q to show JT. Having it asking for a heart with this normal-looking dummy requires some previous discussion. If you want a switch, just play a discouraging heart (10 or 5, depending on your carding) and hope pard can figure it out.

Neither. It does not ask anything, it shows the Q and J of diamonds.

If you were known to be long in diamonds and were therefore very likely to hold the QJ, then playing the J would request a switch.

Also, if there was a possibility of you needing a heart switch (you could hold a void) then the Queen might ask for that switch. But I suppose that's unlikely in this situation: heart tricks are unlikely to go away.

I would look upon the 10 as encouraging the lead. Playing the Q is unnecessarily high, therefore asking for a switch to a heart. Playing the 5 would be asking for a club. Maybe old-fashioned, but I'm sure many play the same as I was taught.

I think it's a congratulatory gesture to the lead of the A♦, indicating an original holding of QJ10.
bridge is never always a game of exact, for those times it's all about percentages, partner and the opponents.
