Well, that's a nice half-story. So where's the other half - what's happening with Hamman and Zia?

Exactly my thoughts. Well, not exactly, I thought 'Wow, they fired H&Z!'. Some I've talked to say it's because Zia is more like a 'solo' artist and apparently that's not well regarded in sponsored teams. Some just said they were blamed for not reaching the BB.

It'd be nice to know the opinion of people in the know... of people close to Hamman... ;)

Actually I was thinking one third of a story - what's happening with team Fleisher?

Kamil and Fleisher commented in the link provided by the OP, congratulating Levin/Weinstein.

They will have to find another pair.

The Nickell team which had been so dominant was slowly declining (likely due to tougher competition), and had a disastrous 2010...for the first time in their history winning no nationals, and not winning the trials or world championships (that said, they were 2nd in the Rosenblum).

This year they haven't won anything, including not qualifying for the bermuda bowl for the first time in forever.

I don't think it's about anything like Zia being a solo artist, it is simply that they haven't had good results and that always causes changes to be made, this is true of all teams in all sports.

It was natural that it would be Levin and Weinstein as the replacements since they're so hot and probably in their prime right now. It was natural that the change would be made to the Hamman-Zia partnership since Meckwell are in or near their prime still, and one of the best pairs in the world (and just won the Europeans).

More questions came to mind than that, although the answers are none of my business ---but I like stuff that is none of my business.

I wondered about the dynamic of having two top-flight players, each with independent means, on the same team.

Bridge players always hate to have superb teammates that come back with a great scorecard.

It is the "independent means" that aguaH is commenting on. If you are not necessarily dependant on Bridge to earn a living, then your attitude to the team sponsor and paymaster may be a little different. It has nothing to do with being superb teammates.

And this begs the question: If you are truly independently wealthy, why even bother with sponsors?

Hmmm... arguably the best team in the world invites you to join them... maybe you initally decide you don't care whether it's a sponsor team, you just think it would be good to be part of the best team in the world.

I wasn't specifically referring to Nickell, or Diamond, though the example would apply to some, if not most of the players involved in past and recent editions of both teams. I just meant in general.

Take six well-off players that just want to crush. They hire a coach/captain, and maybe a trainer.

A team like this would dominate, much like the Blue Team did in the 60's.

Sorry to go off-topic but this error is one of my pet peeves and it is hard to let it go by.

Not sure why this is a pet peeve.....

'the very very wealthy dont have a sponsor period........

I think those worth billions rarely play bridge with a sponser for pay.

Continuing the off-topic, begging the question now means prompting the question (as well as the traditional meaning of assuming the answer in the argument). Prescriptive grammarians can cringe, but language evolves over time.
