On vugraph, one expert commented, "seems like clear action, 1 or even double." Another claimed, "the majority of experts would pass."

advertising a rotten suit has a ton of problems
associated with it--
1. huge penalties when opps can manage x
2. partner can almost never lead properly when
they lead your "suit".
3. convincing p it is a better idea to lead your
"suit" than theirs.

These risks are taken hoping p has a big fit
with your suit and your side can win the bidding.

It is not "wrong" to bid 1h (forget X since p
making a penalty pass would be umm err damaging
to the future existence of the partnership) on
any given hand but it is anti %. If you need a
top at MP or are behind at IMPS overcalling 1h
can be just what the doctor ordered.

Is this imps? What's the vulnerability? Think most experts would pass.
1???? Bad suit, bad hand.
Double???? Only 8 points outside of the suit.

Check the subtitle and the diagram.

Well, you see, I was hoping for input from actual experts, in order to find out.

If this is immediate action hand,
what could possibly be left for reopening?
6 points? 7?
Yes it has a single in their suit,
but that's likely anticipated by partner.
He, too, tries for a major contract.

Why would we ever want a heart lead?

my overcalls are made for reasons. Jxxxx and 9 HC is not a reason. Its closer to double than it is to 1H for me, but there's no way I'm punishing my partner, who could either

1) have not much and be on lead against NT or spades

or

2) have an opening hand and think game is clear with a scattered 12 count and 3 hearts.

I'd have a hard time finding cats that would drag in this hand.

Well I think we all know that if you are overcalling on this kind of hand then you ought to let partner in on the secret. Even Lurpoa would agree.

Clear pass imo, those Jacks don't improve the hand much, the suit is poor, I'm minimum, 1 has no preemptive effect whatsoever,... Give me Kxx-xxxxx-x-AKxx instead and I'll overcall (offensive hand, good defense, 4 controls).

Interestingly enough, game was on opposite 3 hearts and a scattered 1210 count.

Out of 16 tables, only Ventin-Wrang got to a heart contract. 3x= at -730 was good for 12 IMPs in the Butler. All the other tables had NS playing for scores between +110 and -200 (one in 3, one in 1NT, the rest in 2).

all it takes is 5 cards being on side. Shooting for 3h on a hand like this is asinine

Sorry to disappoint you, mgoetze, but IMO _P = 10, _X = 8, 1 = 7, 2 = 2. You don't expect to win the auction often. So the main questions to answer about an overcall are...
  • Does it jam opponents' auction? No
  • Will partner end up on lead and do you want a lead (against 3N, say)? Not sure.
