Final hand of a home game. Partner is an up-and-coming Junior, and you and him seem to be on the same wavelength. The pre-empts by North are very sound, so expect 7 or even 8. What would you bid?

If it makes any difference, partner is playing "in luck", and a small slam would put him in 2nd behind you, not that it means anything to him.

3S, but can't continue; I have UI that opener will make the same rebid whether I bid 3S, 4D, or 4H.

I once yelled at my partner for discarding the 'wrong' card when he was subjected to a squeeze that I allowed by giving the wrong count with too high a card. Now he's allowed to pitch aces when the opponents have the king in the dummy. At trick 2. When he could have followed suit. And blame me.

Making a non-forcing bid below game (4♦) or below slam is not bridge. Raising diamonds is not bridge. The only suggested non-3S bid for which I have mild sympathy is 4NT if that's RKCB.

Over 3S (4H) 5D I agree with Han.

Are the 5N bidders intending it as a grand slam try without first round control in hearts, or as choice of slams?

For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.

3S-- followed by 6C with S and clubs or S+D just looking for the best 6, I would bid 5Nt PAS so 6 clubs is looking for 7. With 2A i expect him to bid 7.

I would intend it as choice of slams, because I'll bid 3♠ and have it coming back to me in 5♦.

3♠ followed by 5NT would also be choice of slams for me. COS is much more frequent than GST imo, so I prefer to use it for that purpose whenever the fit isn't clear and we're at high level.

3S is the only sensible bid and given my dear partner bid I will raise them a level.
