1NT (15-17) on your right. You pass, so does LHO and partner. (You are playing DONT, direct and balancing, if that matters to the range of hands you envision from pd.)

What do you lead? How obvious is it?

Even though this seems like the kind of problem where the form of scoring is really important, I'm leading a heart (systemic 7 for me) anyway so don't bother. I don't think it is close.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I thought so too. But nobody else at the club yesterday believed that was the way to avoid guessing wrong which longest suit to lead. Heh. Declarer was sort of annoyed that his Jxx-opposite-Kxx diamonds didn't get led for him at any point.

I can't say what it is like on your side on the pond, but over here general club players follow "fourth best of longest and strongest suit" like it is some religion or something. It is very hard trying to re-educate them.

I would also lead a at any form of scoring, the other suits are all terrible holdings to lead from.

Q.

Oh wait, did you just say we're NOT trying to set the record for tricks blown on opening lead?

Then I'll go with the 8.

That's because your club is full of type 1 players.
