4 types of hands 1--a balanced type of n/t hand
2--a 2 suiter hand
3--a bagger single suited
4--a 8 trick hand,and does not want a 1 opener to be passed.
So get your block and tackle out-Stayman-major transfers Auto 2d bids over 2cl openers,
dependent what pard responds to your 2d bid

One other feature for advanced players is "Modified Norman" responses to 2cl openers

Maybe I missed some new developments in the 2♣ method, but as far as I know a very strong 3-suiter (5440/4441/5431) is also opened 2♣...

I have this agreement with a partner of mine:

Kokish relay

2c - 2d relay
With a strong nt GF (+24 po) hand opener bids 2h relay to 2s, followed by 2nt = monster hand. System on

2c - 2d - 2h relay - 2s (forced) - now 3h means strong with hearts
2c - 2d - 2h relay - 2s (forced) - 3d or 3c means hearts + the minor bid (at least 5-4)
2c - 2d - 2h relay - 2s (forced) - 3s means hearts + spades (at least 5-4)

We never used it in practice though As it happened no GF two suiter came our way during the past two years.

So this hand could be
2c - 2d
2h (relay to 2s) - 2s (forced)
3d (showing hearts + diamonds at least 5-4)

We are close to an adjusted 2 loserhand.


1) If pard bids 2h denying a or k we wont miss slam(pard never has perfect cards)
2) 2h over 2d gf.
3) of course pard will still play us for 4 losers.

It's a really nice hand but it doesn't have spades. 2♣-2♠-p (random GF)-3♠ and you're in great shape. Is 4NT "two places to play?" 5NT "Pick a slam, I'll correct clubs"? Also, as it turns out, it doesn't have clubs. 2♣-X-p-5♣ isn't unheard of.

1♥ then however many diamonds are necessary will get the point across, even against a spade barrage. It might end up in 5 rather than 6 (or 6 rather than 7), but at least it will get to the right strain.

I guess it depends how often your opponents come in at unfavourable over a 2♣ opening. I will admit that given that it is the worst case for them, and IMPs, that improves the chance that 2♣ will be safe.

Agreed, particularly given that I'm opening 1♥ and only have 2 spades, is much more likely to be passed out if one of my suits is spades and opps have to rescue me at the 2 level. Also in my normal partnership we do tend to respond fairly light, so if partner has the spades he's quite likely to bid them if he has anywhere near a response.

I'd open 2D multi. This includes major-diamond two-suiters for me.
