1 (...) In my style, 1-2;2NT promises a diamond stop and will nearly always (see below) have four hearts. You don't have to agree that this is best, but can you really see no advantages to this style?

2. With 3343 and a very weak hand, yes I tend to bid 2, because when you know that partner is likely to take strong action it's best not to introduce ambiguity about the majors. With xxx QJx Jxxx xxx I would probably bid 1, but with xxx xxx Jxxx QJx I'd certainly bid 2.

1 and 2. There are obviously advantages to your style. I understand you always want to bid 1M with 4 cards (and I believe that style is common in the UK) but I think there's not much point in forcing yourself away from bidding a 3-card major if you're gonna end up doing it occasionally.

What I mean is if you're going to bid 2 on a 3343 with club honors, you might as well do the same without those honors :) Shape/strength before location of high cards. By the same token, if you're going to bid 1 on a 3343 with xxx clubs and heart honors, you might as well do the same with 3334 and bad clubs. Not sure if I'm making myself clear...

By the way, I think the main downside of 2 is not pard being strong, rather him having a med hand (14-17) or so and pass it out when 1 probably would play better.

NO
MP 2c = 8 1h = 5
IMPS 2c = 9 1h = 3

MP PASS 1s chances of game slight and no need at MP
to press for games under 50%.

IMPS 2s just in case -- while being prepared to
apologize to p for having this DRECK and still
raising.

If I had bid 2c ---
MP Pass 2s
IMPS raise 2s to 3s (with apology note ready)

Trouble with this attitude is that given your weakness partner is likely strong and the next what is likely to happen is that partner will jump in or will over-compete in when opener rebids his s. Of course if you knew that partner will next bid you may be better of bidding your 3 card suit.

2 is not the problem. 4is. Doubler is probably only waiting to hear 3 card support

I think you are confusing Olien's pd with some other who loves to repeatedly show his hand. " I am strong, i am strong ,i am strong..." We heard it and just bid 2, he needs extra ordinary hand to continue over this.

And if all pd needs is a 3 cards support to have a good shot in 4, then lets just hide it and dont show ? Take the captaincy with this hand ? Jesus !

And i totally disagree that DBL and then jump to 2 shows only strength. AKxxxx isn't even close for that bid to me. Since u are burning the bridges with all other suits. Most experts overcall upto 18 hcps, and actually some extremes claims "there is no hand which is too good for overcall" All these hands posted in this thread are good example of DBL and then 1 bid imo.

I agree with 1 but thats a style issue i think, i wldnt mind to bid 2, and i definetely bid 2 (assuming imps)
