All red at matchpoints, RHO opens 3D in first seat and my partner and I had the following auction:

(3D) - 4D - (p) - 5D
(p) - 5S - all pass.

10xx
A10x
Axx
AJxx

KQxxxx
QJ9xx
-
xx

Do you agree with the bidding?

The diamond jack is led. You pitch a club on the ace and play a spade from dummy. RHO plays the jack and your queen wins the trick, LHO following low. Now what?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

If it wasn't a problem I would no dobut play a spade to the 10 without thinking much.

RHO will very hardly have AJ Kxxx Q9xxxxx - a heart finese now should be safe, it only gains when RHO has 1174 I think. But worth trying since it is Match points.

You lead the Q and it holds. What now?

RHO could be really smart and play J from Jx. Now he gets his heart ruff.

That would mean LHO had ducked with Ax, when he might be facing KJ. Unless they have a strict agreement not to preempt with side values, I don't think that's likely.

Cherdano's point is a bigger concern. What's more likely, that RHO is 1-1 in the majors and preempted only 3, or RHO has Kxx and is clever enough to duck?

I'd just play another trump.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I probably would have contented myself with 3. I like North's 5 call, and might have pushed to 6.

The question appears to be - is LHO Axx /Kxxx, Axx /xx, or Axx /Kxx?

Can't we try a discovery play here? A, ruff , heart to 10, ruff . If RHO shows out, he appears to be 1=3=7=2, and I know I cannot risk a heart ruff by LHO and I will play the A on the 2nd round. If RHO follows to the 3rd club, then finessing hearts looks safe. If RHO fails on the 2nd heart, A, ruff diamond, ruff heart, ruff diamond, heart etc..

I realize I'll get tapped down to LHO's length if I give up a heart, but thats OK, since I can just play hearts through my LHO.

By the way, I don't think my RHO is jokering with Jx. LHO would look foolish holding up with Ax if his partner held QJ.

I agree with clayton that LHO is unlikely to duck holding Ax. In theory the opponents are good enough to duck with Kxx of hearts, but RHO just returned from the Cavendish and has a jetlag.

I think I would have passed 3 and would prefer 3 to 4. But holding a diamond void it is not clear exactly what to do.

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.
