3,7,Q,K
8,K,6,5
2,4,A,5
8,J, 6,9
4,7,2,A

it seems to me that partner has a spade card. He got the lead twice and failed each time to lead a spade through the 3 small holding, which usually means that he can stand a spade lead from my side. Thus I lead a small spade to partner's presumed K (in case he has Kx), and take 4 black suit tricks.

We need partner to have a black king. There are three reasons for thinking this is in spades:
- With K, he might have played it on this trick, to save me a problem.
- With spades headed by 1098 or J98, he might have switched to a spade after the first heart.
- He played 3-8-4 in trumps. When he played the 3, it probably wasn't clear what suit he wanted to signal for - at that point, spades could have been declarer's long suit. When he played the 8, we both knew that the choice was between spades and clubs.

Hence I play him for K.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
