For this thread pls assume:

1) you open many unbal tens and 99% bal 11 hands.
2) opening 2d=18-19 bal..off shape ok
3) reverses are generally conservative/strongish
4) one bid and 2nt rebid by opener is 17 not 18-19
5) with 4-4 in the minors, your style is to open 1d, very often but feel free to make an exception.
6) 1nt=14=16 off shape often.

What is your bidding plan with:

7...AKJ4....KQT9.....AT65

imps fav vul.

Pard will of course respond 1s if possible....or show spades otherwise.

thank you for your responses in advance.

That seems like a good plan to me too. Then 2NT over pard's 2 rebid.

Pard's reverse has an idea behind it: if responder has a weakish 5-4 in the majors, the 1+2 route will almost certainly cause hearts to be missed, even if it goes

1 1
2 2
2NT

You can still dig out the hearts if responder bids them now, but he will only do that if in the 8-9 region. By reversing you make sure you reach a heart contract.

It's possibly a line of bidding superior to 1+2.

I think it is fairly standard with 1444 to open 1 and rebid 2. If you were planning to invite game anyway why not bid 2 instead of 2NT? Now partner has a fairly good idea of your shape plus or minus one card somewhere. You might be 0454, 1444, or 1354. If partner has four hearts he can raise, with the 1354 pattern you can bid 3NT, or with one of the other two bid 4.

why not bid 2♥ instead of 2NT?

huh.. right. Still, you can think of other cases where hearts might be missed, e.g.

1 1
2 pass

1 1
2 2 (5 good spades or 6 spades)
2NT

If he is passing you probably don't have game, and at least you are in a fit. He probably has 3-5 HCP and 4-5 clubs or three clubs and 0-1 diamonds. If he has 7-8 HCP and 0-1 diamonds and 4 clubs, this is a bidding forum problem, whether to raise, bid 2, or pass. (In the forum you actually have 6 HCP)

Yeah, if responder is not going to accept the invitation, you might miss a heart fit. BUT it is only a heart partscore you are missing. If he is going to accept the invitation, and he has four hearts, he can bid 3 along the way.

thanks for the responses.

This is one of the rare times responder has a better hand than the reverser. I was something like:

AKJxx...Q...Axx....KJ9x

we got to 6nt ...the auction started getting complicated and I bailed out to 6nt...

1d=1s
2h=3d(nat, gf)
3nt=4c?
4h?=6nt?

the other table played 3 way multi or something and had a bidding error and played in 4nt.

FWIW...

With the exception of Mexican 2 (ugh!), every other part of the assumptions are ones with which I agree. So, our styles are very similar. However, I also really like playing an unbalanced 1 opening. This is another pattern where that method helps.

1(unbalanced)-P-1-P-
2NT(17-18 with 1444 or 1453)

That's fabulous!
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Ok i feel free and make exception and open 1[club. First i dont know what prd is going to respond, s/he might bid 1 or even better 1 and now my time has come B-) .
Second even if prds bid is 1 i can always bid my 44 minors by reversing in so i wont be forced to choose between 2 and 3 . In a real world my bid is of course 2 .
If prd now bids 2 i continue with 3 forcing to game ( ok i did that round earlier) if prd is good enough to respond my possible bal. 11 count we must at least have a chance to make game somehow.
