King of hearts lead, to which RHO follows.
Ace of spades, everyone plays low.

remember: matchpoints

Now, line 1 or line 2?

Bonus question: what is it were imps, and you were in game? Does that change you line?

Ruffing a heart, cashing 3 rounds of diamonds, and exiting a spade gains when:

-LHO has 2632 with HT of clubs
-RHO has Kx of spades and KQ of clubs, and LHO is 2632
-RHO has KQx of spades and KQ of clubs, and LHO is 1642

Or, barely possible, LHO has a stiff club honor and Hx of spades. This gives LHO a lot of high cards though, and also a reasonable club lead.

It gets worse though, if LHO does have Kx of spades, he is not that likely to have HT of clubs given his 2H opener (some depending on his preempting style). If he has Qx of spades though, it does become more likely that the endplay on RHO works, but now LHO can have the CQ pretty easily so it's not like it's a lock to work.

Against this, when spades are 2-2 and diamonds are 5-2 we just drop a trick. This seems pretty awful.

If I was playing imps in game, I would CERTAINLY play ace of spades spade. The reason is, the main endplay that the endplay works on, works in order to make FIVE (Kx of spades and KQ of clubs on right). However, if we are in 4S we are just trying to make our game. So instead of saying:

Which is more likely:

-LHO has 2632 with HT of clubs
-RHO has Kx of spades and KQ of clubs, and LHO is 2632
-RHO has KQx of spades and KQ of clubs, and LHO is 1642

OR

LHO has 2623

We say:

Which is more likely:

-LHO has 2632 with HT of clubs
-RHO has KQx of spades and KQ of clubs, and LHO is 1642

OR

LHO has 2623. It is so not close in the second case that it is laughable. Both of those are very unlikely scenarios, 2623 is not.

By the way, whether or not the field is in 4S or not makes NO DIFFERENCE in how we play this hand. None at all.

True. I mentioned matchpoints twice to stop any possible comments about us having 9 obvious tricks, what's the problem...

Yeah I know you know, I just get tilted because 99 % of people, forums or not, seem to think a reasonable analysis of any MP hand is "well, people will be in 4S, so we have to hope that spades are not 2-2 or they'll make, in which case we should ruff a heart first and cater to RHO having KQx xx xxx KQTxx!"

Obviously doesn't change the answer but I don't see how the diamond elimination gains when LHO has HT of clubs.
In fact it seems to lose because you need the diamond entries to eliminate hearts before throwing LHO in with the second club.

I agree. Justin, haven't you put the 2632 with HT on the wrong side?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

When LHO has 2632 with HT of clubs
Ruffing a heart, cashing 3 rounds of diamonds, does not gain, because
we can still effect the same elimination after playing a second .

Win say switch, ruff, , ruff, A, ruff, cash last , duck when LHO
plays the T.

You guys are right of course, had a brain fart sorry. We still have the endplay even without eliminating stuff first.

Huh? If LHO has 2632 and HT of clubs and we ruff a heart, cash the diamonds, and play a spade, they cannot avoid the endplay. It is not necessary but it does not cost.

One of us is having a massive blind spot. Past performance suggests that's likely to be me, but:

They win the spade and play West's club honour. If you take it, ruff a heart, and duck a club to West, he just exits with fourth round of hearts, with North following suit.
