A common bridge puzzle is "what's the fewest HCP required to make a cold grand slam?" or the like. Of course the deals are always contrived. Or are they...? This showed up in the hand records last night.

NS have 14 HCP opposite 13, and with a successful diamond guess are cold for 7NT on any lead.

Of course, if they guess wrong they are going down a lot if the opening lead was a heart, but who would lead away from Qx against 7NT? Not that any of the other suits look particularly attractive...

As an aside, how would you bid the hands (South is dealer)?

I think my auction would be similar, but only +490 on a 4th best diamond lead...

3 for us is a splinter agreeing spades, so we'd have to bid:

1-1
1-2(4SF)
3(good hand, no sensible bid, only 4 spades and 5 clubs or any non broke 4045)-4(5 of them)
4(keycard, 4would normally be KC but could be an offer to play in this auction with a 4225)-4N(0/3)
5(Q ?)-5(no)

1 - 1 (nat - nat)
1 - 2NT (nat - puppet to 3)
3 - 3 (obligated - GF 5-5
4 - 4NT (nat - odd number of keycards without cue and with cue (Kickback Turbo))
5NT - 6 (do you have Q? - no)
pass

Remark: I believe South should know that partner has 3 keycards, otherwise he would just look for game and probably never show his 5s. If he thinks partner has only 1 keycard, then he can signoff in 5 and North will probably pass because he doesn't know if South passed because of missing keycards or because of a missing cue.
