2/1: Responder's 2N Over Opener's Major Rebid What is the meaning of this?

Hi all,

I am convinced that responder's rebid should be 4 and not 2N. After all, he knows we have an eight card fit and around 25hcp. I took his 2N to deny support and put us in 3N. North has it that the rebid was weak. But even so, I think he should have put it in 4.

North says that 2N over my major suit rebid tells me that he has 2 card support and not 3 card support. Is this correct?

Assuming the same shape for my hand, if I am 16hcp+ do I rebid 3?

All relevant help much appreciated.

2N in this auction is invitational to 3NT (2H was passable).

In this specific auction, the people I play 2/1 with would treat 3H as invitational with 2 card support (with 3 card support in this auction, most would raise to game, but maybe with 4333, one could treat it as 2 card support). If instead opener rebid 2D, then 3H would show three card support.

You may notice that I put a lot of caveats in this, as I do not feel like an expert on 2/1 as most play it.

I also would have rebid 3H with the south hand. You don't have the classical amount of points, but are there on playing strength (invite to game in hearts).

I would have rebid 4. Look at your hand: you're 1 trick away from making it. Leave 2/3 rebids to less shapely hands.

I agree with Elianna.
2NT is invitational (with less than 2 hearts): partner passes or bid 3 or 4.

Bidding 2N with a doubleton heart can be fine, sometimes 3N is better than 4H with the 6-2 fit when you have a hand that is loaded outside with soft stuff (exactly like north has). It also depends on your opening bid style whether north has a GF or not, but I'd say no.

That said, 2N does not promise a doubleton heart, you could easily have a stiff or a void.

I think south's bidding was completely misguided with 6-5 shape and a solid suit.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Should the bidding have gone

I think Mike Lawrence had a similar theme in the most recent ACBL Bulletin....and agree with 3 or 4 hearts depending on what kind of dog pard will open.....2NT not a good idea. Feels like hand-hogging and will just tick pard off.

No, in this auction 2 after 4th suit forcing 2 does not promise 6 card , he can bid it with 5422 5431 with no stopper and no 3 cards .

I think N bid very well, the way he did in this example. I'd bid 2 by south over 1

Regardless of whether North's hand is GF, he should bid 1, not 2, at his first call.

16+hcp is way too strict a standard for this. 16+ total points is usually sufficient. Another way to look at it is: you would have opened 1 with: A, KQJ932, 2, T8743; you have an A more than that, so your hand good enough for a jump in suit.
