We play a very strong NT, so interference is unusual. 3NT was making 3,4,5. I made 5C but am only suppose to make 4 double dummy. How do we find the spade stopper when the suit has been bid and raised?
What would a 3NT bid by North mean (instead of 5C)? 3 spades goes down 3 double dummy.

1NT 19-21 2S two suiter with spades

North should expect South to have a spade card as part of his 19-21 and should just bid 3N over 2. This also protects a possible Kx holding by South.

Imo N should've doubled 3 showing good hand / takeout
If that would be for penalty though then I would probably gamble 3NT but I don't like it at all.

Just DBL it regardless of what it means. +500 3 doubled. Much better than going minus. (i assume this is imps ? )

South passed 3 showing he's got nothing to say. North can easily Dbl in which case South can bid 3NT with his half stopper. The message should be clear to both players that together they have a stopper.

sadly not all of us are good enough to get 500 on defence: 3 rounds of diamonds ruffed, club underlead, diamond ruffed and overruffed, trump hooked, duck the jack of hearts, cash 2 hearts and endplay declarer with a club ruff.

i know you're a fan of the JEC matches where the crowds are all 4-handed experts, so you're probably unused to defending with only 2 hands in view.

There are many ways to avoid this. North can

1. Dbl for take out 1st round
2. Bid 4, 4 or dbl 2nd round
3. Forget about stoppers and bid 3NT 2nd round. It's a 19-21 NT, for heaven's sake :)

South can

1. Dbl 3
2. Bid 3NT over 3

etc etc etc
