Justin and Kevin Bathhurst are featured in the BW March 2011 Challenge the Champs.

Their opponents are Chip Martel and Lew Stansby.

Chip is one of several players from our home town of Urbana who introduced me to bridge in 71. I have found the forums a great place to learn as I try and start playing again.

Here is deal one:
MP neither side vul. NORTH DEALER.

void....T982.....AKQT853....J3(west)

A76...AK5....J9762.....K9(EAST)

oO? I remember we lost to them. I also remember losing to Stansby/Stansby in the bridge bulletins bidding contest. Stansby owns my soul :P

I don't remember how we bid this. Maybe

1D-2D
3D-3N

is a good auction? If the north hand splintered, I think south would go crazy, even in a precision context. I mean, x xxx AKxxx AQxx is a good grand.

1-2-2N-3-3N ?

Don't see the point of this hand as 3N(E) and 5(E) seem to score the same, and you wouldn't want to play either from W.

Edit: NM, I counted only 6 diamonds so it does matter, but this hand is so much easier in a weak no trump context so the strong hand automatically plays both and NT :)

Because I play a weak no trump.

yeah, but north is the player on the "right" on the diagram, so if I am not crazy today, East (15 balanced) is to talk before West (7420)

Damn good question!! I guess since it is a contest they just feel they need at least 3 rounds of bidding :)

Justin and Kevin play a version of Precision with a 14-16 nt
Chip and Lew play a version of 2/1 with a weak nt and flannery.

Yes East bids first...north and south are silent.

I misread the diagram, I just saw "north" is dealer and assumed the top hand was north lol. Ok I will guess:

1N 2C
2D 3D

Then I have no idea but I doubt we could get to 3N after that, the south hand is too good for diamonds to just bid it. North can not really shoot out 3N over 2D with a spade void I don't think. TBH I hope we got to 5D and not 6!
