There is no good answer here, this is a nightmare hand. I'd double at the table, but perhaps simulations could show pass is better?

Partner has spade shortness probably, and couldn't act immediately. This argues in favor of passing, but I think we have to protect here.

X and I pass 4♥ by partner. Hopefully he has 5 or 6 of em. Not happy about it but oh well. If I want to try to play 5m then I would bid 4♠, but on a really good day partner bids a minor anyway.
I once yelled at my partner for discarding the 'wrong' card when he was subjected to a squeeze that I allowed by giving the wrong count with too high a card. Now he's allowed to pitch aces when the opponents have the king in the dummy. At trick 2. When he could have followed suit. And blame me.

Problem for me on this hand is not whether to pass or not. It is my second bid that worries me over 4♥ by partner if i start DBL.

I am bidding 4 NT (hoping they didnt raise with 2 card fit only) and will say sorry to partner if he has x xxxx xxxx xxxx or things go bad. Who knows 5 minor may go down less than 4♥ with 4-2 fit. But i strongly believe we can make 5 minor if pd has a little more than just x xxxx xxxx xxxx with ♦ help. Downside to this will be when pd has 6♥ or 5♥ and 5 minor is not making.

Partner is going to bid 4H with 1444, 14(35), 04xx, most of the time with 14(26) etc. Even if partner has 5 hearts he will get tapped. Doesn't seem that great.

At last some common sense. Those that are aware of the problems with double still do it any way. I pass.

I am also going to pass. I am not happy abut it, however I think bidding is worse.

while no guarantee of success this option gives us our best overall chance of success. Opps preempt for a reason------this is one of them, hoping to get us
into awkward bidding sequences. Pass might indeed result in a moderately bad
minus score (in 4h) vs a small plus or small minus we will get from a pass.
X has the potential to reach an otherwise unreachable game or even slam
(I know how optimistic can one get) for a huge payoff. Risk vs reward seems
to lean toward risk with this hand so I choose x and have my SP frowny face
all ready if it doesn't work (and hopefully they will say np p I would have
done the same thing).

Thanks to all that replied. When the hand was actually held, partner had a blizzard with six hearts so double would have won on this occasion (if you decided to sit for 4H.) The person who held the hand bid 4NT for a disaster. I personally don't think any of the three choices that got votes (pass, double, 4NT) are terrible. I chose pass since I have seen a lot of two-card raises.

Why would they double? They should be happy to run the first 6 spade tricks undoubled.

This hand I kinda fancy 3NT, expecting X, now SOS XX asks minor.
Or I go off 2-3 undoubled when partner doesn't insist his suit.

Pass. This is one of those hands where we may have the hcp but can't make squat.

We probably belong in 4 of a minor, but there's no way to get there. If pard dbls 3♠ we might get to game, but other than that we're just fixed.

So stay fixed. Pass.

Excellent hand for exercising judgement, by the way.
