You hold:

Ax
J9xxxx
void
A9xxx

It's the first board of a one session pairs event, no one vulnerable. Your opponents are one of the stronger pairs in the field. You play 2/1 with 2 diamonds, hearts, and spade being weak 2's. The auction goes P-P-?

I pass this one. The reason being, despite the excellent shape, we are likely to be outgunned on this hand, and partner is likely to be on lead against something. I fear a heart lead against their 4 spade/ 5 diamond contract may be fatal.

I am bidding 1H on this. There is no reason whatsoever that a H lead will be "fatal", and who says your partner will be on lead? Lets get in there - not 2H as the Hearts are not good enough.

Hi,

most likely I would go with Pass, intending to come in later with
a 2-suited overcall.

But 1H is not bad, espesicially, if you regl. open light in 3rd seat.

With kind regards
Marlowe

1 for me. Always and against everyone. I'm not going to distort my hand with a preempt with this suit.
