for sure. Both low or Ace can work, it's probably better to lead small to avoid squeeze possibilities.

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

is only good if partner has KQ (setting up a trick) or QJ(not gving away a trick).

KQ almost impossble after this bidding....
QJ, exactly, unlikely

A of H ! hoping for a signal by partner.

No, it's pretty useless imo.

Heart is the last thing I'd lead. This isn't a long suit-based slam. It's an hcp slam and a thin one.

10.

There are other considerations though:

- At the moment, there's a displeasing asymmetry about my hand. I have three clubs, three diamonds, and three spades, but four hearts. If I lead a heart, I will then only have three hearts. That will look much nicer.

- For clubs, diamonds and spades, if you sum the values of the spot cards in the suits, you get an odd number, but for hearts it's an even number. If I lead A (or 5), that will make the sum of the heart spots an odd number, like the other suits.

- I have only four points, which isn't very interesting. On the next deal I will probably have more points. That will be more fun, so the sooner we get onto the next deal the better. A heart lead looks like a good way of accomplishing that. Probably best is ace and then 10.

- A heart lead will also help to reduce the risk of a slow-play penalty.

This is probably the best answer but I can't help myself, I lead the ten of spades at both forms of scoring. If he has thirteen tricks on top I'll take my lumps.

Partner needs nothing at all like the QJ in order for this not to give up a trick. If partner has Jxx or less, declarer already owns the spade suit. If partner has Jxxx and declarer has a four card spade suit and cashes eleven top tricks I can come down to the 9 of spades and the ace of hearts (if it appears partner needs my help protecting spades). What I don't want to do is lead a small spade when partner has Jxxx and declarer holds AK8x opposite Qx. No cleverness required to come to four spade tricks.

I suppose I can imagine some holding where the lead of the ten gives up a trick but it seems like the least likely lead to do so. Mostly, at mps, the danger is thirteen tricks w/o touching hearts and it might happen. But I am leading the spade ten. If "low spade" means the ten, then fine, but I am not leading the deuce.

I would agree with the ten of hearts, reducing each suit to three characters - assuming we are not using T for ten, except that the ten of spades also has two characters. With any luck the layout will be something like AJx K8x KQx AKQx opposite KQx J9x AJx 109xx, and the ten of hearts will be the only lead to let it through. I will also achieve my aim of being dropped from the team. I can live with the ace of hearts, as dummy did not use Stayman, and partner can have the king. In fact I think it is the best shot.

leading a heart, aesthetically pleasing as it may be, will give away the contract much more often than it will beat the contract if both hands are relatively balanced (and yes, I realize Andy was kidding). A not uncommon position would be Qxx opposite Kxx. I'm leading a systematic spade.

I find the spade lead so obvious that the only reason I see for this to be a problem is dummy coming up with KJ8 and we kind of blow a trick, pard having the queen.

If I led a low heart I would follow through on my plan by pitching the ace on the fourth round of a side suit.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention the scoring is IMPs, if that changes your answers...

This was the actual hand, try not to fall out of your seat!

I led the 4 of , not too sure if that was optimal. switch the 8 and 9 and I might be in trouble...
