Mine is extra distribution but not extra strength. More or less the same strength as a 2C free bid here, ~6-10ish. After 1banana-X-1grape most all my bidding except cuebids is based on the "assume points are 20 and 20, let's talk about distribution" theory.
Against habitual psychers / ultralight responders, the invitational meaning may still be better.

If you are asking for a hand with a 4 card suit that I would bid 3♣: 6xxx Kx Qxx KQJx
Otherwise, I'll opt for a stopperless 1N, or perhaps a heavy 2♣ in lieu of a jump.
(edit - I must have been thinking about something other than bridge when I wrote this. Will revisit this AM).

I had ♣KQxxxx with not much at the side (maybe a J somewhere) and the bidding did go:
(1♦)-DBL-(1♠)-2♣
(2♦)-Pass-(Pass)-3♣
(Pass)-3NT-All Pass
I hoped that partner didn't expect more from me 2♣-3♣ bids and wondered what a direct 3♣ would have been.
Partner had a strong NT hand (We play 1NT for the minors) and made 3NT.

1NT over 1D for the minors is one of the worst conventions I have heard of recently.

After 1♦ (dbl) 1♠ at IMPs, wouldn't you bid 3♣ with xxx Axx xxx AQJ10? That is, no four-card major, no semblance of a diamond stopper, not strong enough to game-force, and strong enough to worry about missing game after a 2♣ advance.

I am surprised that this thread has gone on so long. The first two responses (JLOGIC and Phil) were right and seem to cover all of the bases. It is hard to imagine that there is any contrary view held by more than a small minority of players.

Basically you forgot to mention that you play powerdoubles?
With a standard takeout Dbl this should be invitational, with powerdoubles it depends on what your agreements are. Do you bid with weak distributional hands or do you wait for another Dbl first for example...

You can still play this jump to 3♣ as invitational using power doubles, but it needs to be five pieces for sure.

=> Powerdouble=takeout DBL that includes the 15-17NT?
Yes, a disadvantage is surely that partner is more likely to be be shorter in the suit and that a jump should be 5 or 6-card.
