I would had bid 1NT to sow some strenght, not sure what I'd do now, I would pass with no conviction.

2♠ doesn't show extras to me. Just a normal min (up to a bad 15 or so) and 6 cards.
I'm doubling, on grounds that they're not going to make an overtrick and could easily go down 500.

I am going to guess that they play transfers over 1S X and that's why it was passed (very common agreement here). Seems like a trap but I'd rip this. RHO was under pressure and had no game try (enter gnasher to tell us why 2N should be a game try ). He probably gambled on his partner having a little something in order to make a vul game. For instance, wouldn't we all bid 4H on a 1444 18 count on this auction? We have that hand destroyed.

does that translate into pass&defend or X. Having seen some of the opening calls being foisted on readers of BBO Fora I am more inclined for the former.
