Most 8 card suits are sound 4 level overcalls. Especially where they are headed by 3 of the top five honours. Good bid!

Opps have a laydown 3NT (in fact they make 5NT), and you are only 2 down in 4Sx. It looks a good result to me.

I think I'd also bid 4, but I always hate the 3 card ... You can see by partner's hand why :)

For what its worth, I held the same hand and chose to overcall 1. I thought that the hand had too many first round controls to jump to 4.

Nice bid Sceptic!

As your skills develop, you will learn the importance of pressure bidding.

Here, 3N is easy, but arguably you take take a push to 4 over 3N; although they might find a push to 4N. Playing 4N is literally impossible after your direct 4 call.

The unlucky part of the deal is the fact you can beat 5 (-2).

4S far better call than 3S. I would expect to get very little argument there.
I tend to lead fourth best - as opposed to the best suit, the second best suit, or the third best suit for our side

What did you do when 3NT came back to you?

At my table, LHO raised diamonds rather than trying for a NT game.
I eventually declared 4X, making on a mis-defense.

Close but no cigar...

I ducked a heart, however, it was a diamond continuation after the duck...
