Start with a double.

If I double, then what?

I'll pass. I'm guessing LHO is not in on the joke, and we will have a better idea what to do next round.

Presumably you make the value NT bid after you double, to show 20-21 HCP and plenty of spade stoppers. They are white, you are red, and you aren't likely to get a reopening double on whatever partner has left (not knowing about the psyche), so you have to start the auction rolling now. With luck, they raise to 2 and partner makes a responsive X or something.

Wow passing to me seems really wrong. We don't even know they have psyched (without looking at the hand diagram). Partner is just supposed to guess we have this when it comes back around to him with his 3334 8-count, vul vs not? (this assumes, of course, that they haven't psyched).

I'm probably rebidding 3NT next, as any king gives us play (and wouldn't raise 2NT), we are likely to get a spade lead (possibly even the king!) if they've psyched, and I love vul games. Maybe it's a bit over the top though.

Easy X+NT. If you made my club a spade I'd have a real problem.

Agree with l milne. 3rd seat favourable opening these days can be almost anything.

IMO _X = 10, _P = 9
A concern with double is that it commits you to rebid notrump -- fraught when RHO hasn't psyched.

Usually this will be against the rules.

The rules provide that repeated violations of partnership agreements lead to implicit agreements.

An agreement even if implicit to open on "almost anything" is very likely to violate system regulations and even if allowed by system regulations would require appropriate disclosure.

I have never seen a pair who open on "almost anything" in third seat have this disclosed on their convention card.

I agree with Cascade that an implicit agreement, to open on tram-tickets, sometimes, in third seat, appears to be against the rules of most competitions. But these rules are so rarely enforced that the only players penalised are those who comply with such rules.

at the table, I started with a double. LHO bid 2, partner bid 2H...I bid 3 as western cue LHO doubled, and partner pulled to 4 . 4 made 4 for a cold bottom because everyone else is in 4 or 5 making 5

I would normally play that doubling spades and then bidding clubs was natural.

Start double and then bid 2NT or 3NT. Passing is very dangerous, balancing 1 is harder than other suits. Balancer has no 1 level call except 1 NT. Even at balancing seat 2/1 overcalls require more than 1 level balancing.

Opponents psyce really doesnt matter, if it was our turn we were gonna open 2 NT anyway.
