Playing 2/1 (basically Lawrence style), how do you take the auction 1♠-2♦-2♥-3NT? It seems standard that this shows about 15-17 hcp, with weaker or stronger hands instead bidding 2NT. But how many spades will responder have here?

For me, it's nearly always 2, but might be 1 with a 1354 shape with a poor club suit.

The corollary question here is what should opener do over 3NT holding an intermediate (14+-17) 6-4 hand with 6 spades: bid 4S completing his/her pattern risking finding responder with 1 (or, omg, 0) spades, or just passing 3NT. This is one problem that arises from not having a natural 2NT ressponse available to help describe yet limit responder's hand.

Since 3NT takes so much room, I want it narrowly defined in both shape and strength. 2-3-5-3 shape and 15-17 HCP for me.

Agreed. If responder has a tough distribution like 1-3-5-4, then I'd prefer 2NT. In fact I think that's what Lawrence recommends with that distribution.
