That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

1 spade for me too. Hand looks very useful to P.

Hi Denis, glad to see you have joined the forum :).

I'll go against the majority of bidders so far : I'd pass this.
No strong feelings about this, but :
- my Heart holding is bad (stiff honors) ;
- my J looks worthless ;
- my overall strength/distribution relative to "our suits" (blacks) is poor ;
- my Spades are awful ;
- the spade fit is not guaranteed (3424, 3415 possible by CHO) ;

If opener rebids 2, I'll balance w/ 2. If he bids 1N or 2m, I'll be happy to defend.

While the spade fit is not guaranteed there is only one way (most of the time) to find out if we have a fit and that is to bid now.

I am not that pessimistic about my heart honours they are in one of the suits that partner suggested that I bid. I think it is reasonably likely that partner has the ace and if not the jack which might be able to be made use of.

If you're worried about the lack of a spade fit, why do you want to bid
pass 2 pass pass
2
instead of
1 2 pass pass
pass

... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I'd rather bid 2 than pass, but 1 is the correct bid of course.

If LHO bids 2, I'll assume that oppos have 8 Hearts, hence pard is very likely to hold 4315 or 4324. I wan't to be in 2 now. OTOH if they don't have a Heart fit, I'd rather defend the hand.

I offer one top H plus maybe a C-ruff as tricks. I'm not encouraging partner on this.

But you are still guessing and relying on the opponents to bid sensibly.

1 doesn't have these drawbacks. Partner will always bid 2 with four, and pass with three.

Clear 1S with the optimistic hope his S are considerably better than mine. This is not such a bad hand for S really and if we do not compete now, when?

1S.

But we are sticking fairly consequent to shape requirements
for a T/O, so I can be pretty sure to have a fit in spade,
not 100% sure, but fairly sure.

The fit is in spades.

As for the useful hand, I am staring at it.
