Agreed. And South should feel that he has completely described his hand at 2N, so he shouldn't take any action over North's non-forcing 3D. But, I also agree with Nigel that I would have bid 1N directly but can't fault South for refraining.
PS: What was the purpose of 2S, if not to ask partner whether he had a spade stop to allow us to play 3N?

3♦ can't be forcing since north is limited by not having opened 2♣ and south could be very weak.

I do not like the suggestion of 1N at all with South.

If it goes -1, well, "nice lead".

north still needs a little extra from south aside from a spade stop. he knows if south has this much he's not going to have many cards in hearts or he'll have ventured a double of 1S. as such if south has no extras, a heart lead is likely to leave 3nt in the toilet unless south has a quick trick (unlikely). the defence to 3NT will be simple for the opps too with 8 tricks on the dummy.
in such circumstances is there any point to playing in diamonds? yes....8 of diamonds or jack of clubs gives play to 3D when 3NT has none.
south failed to appreciate how good a hand north had shown imo. i blame south for not bidding 3H or 3NT.

having discovered a spade stopper, you should raise 2NT to 3NT,
you have a solid suit, you know it, but partner does not.
