I might have bid 1NT the first time with South but that is pretty aggressive and pass is fine. I would have raised 2NT to 3 with North and would not normally have a solid suit to bid 3. South still has a clear 3NT at the end though as North has shown a very good hand and 3 will often fail if 3NT does.

South said they had a spade stop when they bid 2N, why North does not bid 3N after that looking at 8 tricks in their own hand is beyond me.

Agreed. And South should feel that he has completely described his hand at 2N, so he shouldn't take any action over North's non-forcing 3D. But, I also agree with Nigel that I would have bid 1N directly but can't fault South for refraining.

PS: What was the purpose of 2S, if not to ask partner whether he had a spade stop to allow us to play 3N?

Looks normal to pass 3. You have told partner what you have got - weak with a spade stopper.

3 can't be forcing since north is limited by not having opened 2 and south could be very weak.

I don't see 3 passes after the 3 call so am assuming the auction died there. I would have preferred an X of 1NT to 2 but having gotten a 2NT response I wouldn't push my luck and would just raise to 3NT

Agree North should bid 3N. I'm more worried about hearts than anything else, but since the opponents did not mention them, partner rates to have something or they cannot take more than three tricks.

I do not like the suggestion of 1N at all with South.

I think 3 should be forcing (inv should just bid 3 over 2) but I guess I don't know what it should show. Perhaps a big hand with non-solid diamonds is reasonable. Anyway, whatever it shows, north seems to have a normal 3n.

If it goes -1, well, "nice lead".

South needs to bid stronger, I don't think 2NT nor the final pass are apropiate, he cannot have better cards.

I don't think South should have passed 3D, but more importantly I don't understand why North did not raise 2NT to 3NT. He found out about a spade stop opposite and he has 8 tricks in his own hand. Why did he bid 2S if not to get to 3NT by partner?

i don't object to north's bidding. the cue after partner passes the 1S overcall must show pretty close to a 2C opener.

north still needs a little extra from south aside from a spade stop. he knows if south has this much he's not going to have many cards in hearts or he'll have ventured a double of 1S. as such if south has no extras, a heart lead is likely to leave 3nt in the toilet unless south has a quick trick (unlikely). the defence to 3NT will be simple for the opps too with 8 tricks on the dummy.

in such circumstances is there any point to playing in diamonds? yes....8 of diamonds or jack of clubs gives play to 3D when 3NT has none.

south failed to appreciate how good a hand north had shown imo. i blame south for not bidding 3H or 3NT.

Hi,

having discovered a spade stopper, you should raise 2NT to 3NT,
you have a solid suit, you know it, but partner does not.
