I mean he can either pass or bid 5, it depends on his table feel. I don't like pass from him but bidding the 4 card suit???

It seems to be a recent trend to bid (a much weaker) 4-card suit with 4-6 combination.

that had to be said.

We don't have a forcing bid after the X, other than XX which implies no fit.

What do you use 2NT for then? Natural?

2N is natural yes, these are our agreements;

1m (X) 2m 6-10 nf
1: (X) 2 Criss cross Limit Raise in clubs
1: (X) 3: Criss cross Limit Raise in diamonds
1m (X) 2N 10 - 11 balanced, with major suit stoppers
1m (X) xx 10+ no fit, balanced
1m (X) 1M 1M here ignores the double, could be 4, could be less than 10 - similar to 1m (p) 1M

So I could have used 1 (X) 2

Yes, but I don't think it would have accomplished anything on this hand, except eventually still having to make a decision over their 5D.

Agree. With the actual distribution, it is not a time for science. I think the 5 bid is fine, an initial 6 has lots of merits too.

What do you use the redouble for?
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

But Kathryn, these hands ARE suitable for a 1NT bid.

I guess I bid 6C, primarilly to try and avoid a double game swing. Who knows, maybe it will make.

Is that usually a major consideration at matchpoints?
