2N is natural yes, these are our agreements;

1m (X) 2m 6-10 nf
1♣: (X) 2♦ Criss cross Limit Raise in clubs
1♦: (X) 3♣: Criss cross Limit Raise in diamonds
1m (X) 2N 10 - 11 balanced, with major suit stoppers
1m (X) xx 10+ no fit, balanced
1m (X) 1M 1M here ignores the double, could be 4, could be less than 10 - similar to 1m (p) 1M

So I could have used 1♣ (X) 2♦

Yes, but I don't think it would have accomplished anything on this hand, except eventually still having to make a decision over their 5D.

Agree. With the actual distribution, it is not a time for science. I think the 5♣ bid is fine, an initial 6♣ has lots of merits too.
