We were playing some money bridge with friends tonight and this situation came up, just wanting to know what would happen in tournament (or more serious money bridge group)?

None vul, my partner deals:

1NT (2NT) X (3S)
X (4C) X (4D)
P (P) X AP

1NT was 10-12, 2NT wasn't alerted (Intented as minors), nothing was asked and they had no specific agreement of UNT over our NT. (Although no contradicting agreement)

2NT bidder held Kx x Qxxxx KQxxx or alike. I'd assume he used UI when bidding 4C.

3S bidder had 5 card support for Ds and 4D was a make for 14€ swing. :)

Money bridge is cut-throat, every man for himself. There's no director to rule on things like UI.

What was the UI you think he used, anyway?

The lack of alert of course. 3S bidder actually assumed 2NT as natural.

Who alerts in money bridge? And why would 2NT be alertable anyway?

WTF?? In money bridge there is a strong obligation (some might say 'stronger') to alert. 2N isn't alertable anyway and the non-alert is not UI to the overcaller.

I don't understand these attitudes that money bridge is cutthroat and we don't alert. People that say this either don't play money bridge or have a (incorrect) romanticized view that money bridge is like poker.

Deal me in too. What psycho plays a kamikaze NT for green points?

Haven't played money bridge since college, and not much then, but afaik, alerts are a matter of regulation. Written regulation. Are there such regulations in money games? Or do people just take for granted that players will (or will not) alert?

Hi:

Meckwell 'played' a 9-12NT.

I am sure that they will agree to play you for money(if the stakes at right) and they will use a 9-12NT.

It is not the range, but the players involved that you should note before you sit down to play for 'green points.'

Fantunes currently use a 12-14NT. Many other pairs also use a 'weak' NT and appear to thrive and survive at IMPs or for 'green points.'

Regards,
Robert

I also haven't played money bridge in at least 15 years. But in the crowd I played with, everyone was expected to play the same system (pretty simple: 5-card majors, weak 2's, Stayman, Blackwood), and there were no alerts. Occasionally players had to improvise bids, but there were no special partnership agreements about them.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is.

I doubt that I would have much company in the world if I were willing to play them for money using a 9-12 NT. So I don't see why this was said. Am I supposed to feel ashamed of my own ability because I wouldn't take this action?
That being said, It would make an interesting prop bet if they were forced to play some silly range like 6-8.
