Scoring: IMP

The bidding:

RHO you LHO Partner
pass 3 X 4
pass 4 pass pass
4 pass pass 5 Heart

You play in a knock out, opps and partner are world class. The opps even earned money at the cavendish, partner had a medal from a World Chamionship.
You are me, so you are not at thsi standard.
You guess that you have lost your half time lead, but it is close.

Scenario A: LHO leads the ace of clubs and return a low spade, you play the...?

Scenario B: RHO inquired you about the 4 bid (no agreement) and LHO needs about 3 Minutes before he leads a spade at trick two.

If you cares: On the ace of clubs RHO gives a small one. Usually they give count.
I did not ask whether they would give Lavintahl with a singelton at the table. Even if, I would not care about their signal here.

Hint: The spade honours are divided. :D
Kind Regards

Roland

I play the king both times. RHO wasn't enthusiastic about bidding 4, was apparently happy to see us in 4, but didn't want to double it. All of those suggest that A is on the left.

In your second scenario, the question reinforces the inference about RHO's liking for 4, and LHO's pause suggests that he's worried about losing A when RHO has a trump trick.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I don't think RHO really cares about diamonds. What sort of hand does he have? 5 seems likely. Also 5? Would he really ask about the bid with Qxxx? Would LHO make a takeout double with a stiff ?

I guess lefty has like AKQxxx of and Qxxx of , though it may just be the case that RHO didn't want to bid 4 and get doubled if 4 was to play or something since it isn't game yet.

I guess this mostly suggests popping K, but it seems pretty random.

I vote Jack-King to be sure I guess 50% of the time

I don't have any strong inferences, I think the defence is automatic with Q and only with heart shortness it might be wrong to do it with A.

KK

IMO he is thinking (case 2) about the impossibility of beating it.

Case 1 he is a bit quicker thinking.

I don't understand. If you guess lefty has like AKQxxx of and Qxxx of , why aren't you playing the J?

Because while AKQxxx Qxxx is a possible hand, just based on HCP it's more likely lho has the A
