this one came up today....

1C - 1S
3D - 3H
3N* - 4C
4D - 4N
5N - 6D? ? ?

3D = splinter in this partnership
3H = cue-bid
3N = can be either cue-bid in hearts or serious, which ever you like
4D = cue-bid
4N = Roman KeyCard Blackwood
6D = the question.... what is it?

6C would have asked for spade Queen (trumps).
What do you think 6D is? Some options

a. General slam try
b. asking side kings
c. specific king ask in diamonds (!?)
d. specific king ask in clubs
e. to play
f. something else (be creative).

Spades is trump a long time ago. Opener showed 2 Keys with a diamond void?

Sounds like 6D just says we have all the keys and asks if Opener has extra club length for 13 tricks. One of those bids I like ---gives partner the chance to make the final mistake.

Guarantees all the keycards and the queen of trumps and shows grand slam interest.

I have a much larger question here. Not sure if I follow this auction from the Splinter forward.

It looks like Opener bid 3 as a splinter, then 3NT as serious, then 4 to say that the shortness in diamonds is perhaps a void or perhaps the Ace, and then 5NT to re-affirm that the diamond is a void.

But, maybe 4 over 1 would have been a void splinter, in which case this auction is a complete mystery to me.

What has Opener shown by his 5NT call, contextually? 6 asks some question in that context, and it asks whatever 6 and/or 6 doesn't ask.

And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Maybe opener feels that the 3D splinter leaves room and 4D void splinter takes up room --- and in this case responder used that space to gain information from 3NT that opener has top of his previous bids (if 3NT=serious).

How exactly do you play 5N? Does it show an even number or is it 0/3 since the void is known (I prefer the latter). Agree with the 1st step - 6 = Q ask.

When I've discussed this with partners - the 2nd step is a grand try and normally asks for Kings. It might be better for 6 to focus on clubs and 6 to focus on hearts, but the next time this comes up in my regular partnership, we would forget it anyway ;)

I play this as asking for the trump Q for grand.

what's 5NT?

Anyway, I happen to have bids like 6 defined as "need some help in this suit for the grand". But that's only my definition.

5NT has confirmed the Diam void.

1st step over 5NT, or 6C! , would be Q-ask
2nd step, 6D!, for me would be specific K-ask.
....... there is room to show the K with 6H;
....... if no K but have the K, my "guess" is to show it with a 6NT reply ( only because Diam is a void ).

.......if partner had bid a 6H-ask instead ( ie. at least a step past the 2nd step ) it would have been a 3rd Rnd Ctrl ask in .

Like some have asked, what's 5NT?

6 would be asking K if you play spiral scans I think...
