On this forum, I have pushed a use of 2 clubs to show a three suited hand, any game force, or an acol 2 bid in a major. This is exactly the method I lifted directly from Dr. Chris Ryall’s webpage. I showed a few random hands to illustrate the method.

I recently got my hands on a copy of BridgeBRowser by Stephen Pickett (sfpb on bbo). This is an incredibly powerful tool for examining bridge hands (read more about it at Read more about bridgebrowser here. I ran his database of BBO hands through this looking for anyhand with dealer having 4441 distribution, and 16 plus hcp, looking for hands that would open 2C to see how the system would perform. In this file I show the first 10 hands that meet these criteria, the results in bbo, the results using the three suited 2club method. A special note, just having 4441 and 15, or 17 points is not enough. You must also have 2 to 5 “losers”, and least 5 controls (A=2, K=1), and if you are weak (15, 16, 17) you need fair quality spot cards in at least two of your suits (J’s, T’s and 9’s are useful). So for these hands, I am showing the first 10 that the database program pulled up.

Six hearts is a great contract that easily makes without a club lead, as when you discover th er horrible spade split, you have time to fall back on the club finesse. But even on a club lead where you win the club ACE, good form will have you ruff a club early and eventually a second club ruff drops the king, so again you avoid losing a spade trick. Win a whooping 12.7 imps, net 12.7

4C – 4D         4C = 4/5 loser short D
4H – 4N         4D = tell me more, 4H = 4414 with 5 losers

Take a look at the field playing 1D. Some in 4S were given a second chance after 1D wasn’t passed out. Now look at the three suit auction, reaching 4S is automatic, win 7 imps, net 19.7 for 2boards

3N – 4C       4D = 5 loser, 4441
4D - 4S       4S = too many losers to go on..

Maybe responder should just bid 4S over 3NT

Ok, this one was a little easier to bid, regardless of system, but the three suited system still picks up a nice 9.5 imps, net 29.2 for 3 boards. In the method from Chris Rydal, the bidding would be

The bid of 3NT is out of fear partners short is diamonds, if you bid 3C in this case, his 4C bid takes you beyond your safety level of 3NT. No luck, 3NT down one when hearts fail to behave, lose 4 imps. If it worked on all the hands, even I wouldn’t believe it. Net 25.2 / four boards

Amazingly simple little hand, win 4.5 more, for net 40.7 over 6 boards. 4H is I want to play hearts even if that is your short suit. Not 4H denies solid suit (would have bid 2NT or 3NT) or suit headed by AJ or KJ (would have responded 3H to 2C. So shows a suit like this.

You have right sided this contract, if you are playing this system, you are probably good enough card maker to bring this home, but since the field bids 3NT, we will assume this on is a push (bidding system didn’t make a difference). So stay at net 48.7 over ten boards.

Indeed, a strong multi 2c with Roman hands in it can be very effective (which, incidently, is why many multi 2d players use it to describe similar hands). The downside seems to be mostly how rare these hands are. This post illustrates the gains - would be nice if you (or someone else, of course) could post a follow-up with potential downfalls (bidding over interference, for example, or the 'wasted' potential meanings of using alternate methods.

I read Dr. Ryall's page, and yes I agree the system is interesting, and pretty effective. A few comments:

1. Without going into a lot of detail, however, I would venture that I could reach 70% of the slams in comfort just using a strong club, however. Standard bidding isn't well equipped to deal with moderately strong hands (16-21) opposite minimum responses.

I am playing with some rebid sequences in a strong club setting that would allow us to show 3 suiters in a similar fashion. Right now, we have balanced, single suiters and 2 suiters down pat by Opener. 3 suiters are a bit of a problem, but are a lesser priority, mostly due to frequency.

2. He is quiet on how this affects strong balanced hands (which you ostensibly have to change as the 2♣-2♦-2N sequences are now occupied).

3. It seems this system would be well adapted for a 2/1 or ACOL structure. I think it would create problems for a strong club structure, unless, perhaps if you want to make a 1♦ opener very short, which I'm not willing to do.

Well, like Dr. Ryall, I roll the strong balanced hands into multi 2D. and have never really missed them (really strong ones, still 2C). From my experience this has not been a problem, but perhaps I can look at how balanced 22-23 hands are doing using Bridgebrowser.

I have a few more sets of these hands.. but interest is fairly low. The next 20 4441 hands follow the same pattern as the first 10. So after 30 hands, still doing good.

You are right of course, that a strong club system will allow you to reach these, at giving up a natural 1C. This is a "cludge" to allow 2/1 bidders to keep up with you guys when on these kind of hands... whereas you guys have to figure out how best to compete with us on hands where you open but haven't suggested your suit yet.

This south hand is a little light. True it has 17 hcp, but the spade suit is very weak, and a lot of the values are in the short club ace. This is exactly the kind of hand I said to not open with the system. If you open 1D, you will safely stay out of game. But let’s assume after seeing all the good results in the first post in this thread, you decided to give it whirl.

Over 2NT, 3C ask for more information if the first response was 2D.

My concerns when I adopted this was that the auction...

2C - 2D
2NT

Becomes game force, when 2D bidder might just have one king, and the 2NT bidder could have 15 or 16 hcp. Getting to game with 18 hcp is not something I strive to do every day. Real life examples, I ahve looked at several hundrerd now thanks to bridgebrowser, shows this method is a huge winner however.

OrShoham and pclayton have raised some concerns, not dealing with this method perse, but rahter to what you lose to keep this method vaible for the rare hand in which the criteria are meet.

OrShoham challenge was could post a follow-up with potential downfalls (bidding over interference, for example, or the 'wasted' potential meanings of using alternate methods.

And Phil's was He is quiet on how this affects strong balanced hands (which you ostensibly have to change as the 2♣-2♦-2N sequences are now occupied), which I assume mimic's many of the same.

I will address teh inteference question directly. Double is for takeout if they interefer, and pass is forcing. Redouble is penalty oriented. This has worked out ok so far. People are a more leary of interfereing over 2♣ than forcing 1♣, but when vul is right, they do so. The big balanced hands will be handled in a thread on Balanced hands with multi...

Like every system it's all wonderful and pretty, especially the examples which are shown to let the system look great. However I have some remarks on that:

1) Lots of these examples you start bidding with the wrong hand (but I guess this is on purpose)

2) When you get heavy intervention, you get troubles I think. But any system will have that same problem in that case...

3) These hands aren't very frequent. Ofcourse it depends on the minimum requirements, but I've run a quick simulation and these are the results:

4441 or 5440 hands:
15+HCP = 0.62%
16+HCP = 0.44%
17+HCP = 0.28%
18+HCP = 0.18%
And as I pointed out, you don't get all these hands in 1st hand, so opps or partner could've bid before you.

Hi free, actually, I had the software (most excellent BridgeBrowser) find hands where DEALER had the three suiter and the 15/16 + hcp. Bridgebrowser rotates the hand so that declearer is always south.. .and I just pick the hand and showed my auction without regards for who looked like they were south. This makes it LOOK like I started the bidding in the wrong place. So in fact, for these examples, I always started the bidding by dealer.

As far a picking "examples that look great".... I didn't hand pick these examples, I took the first group of hands that bridgebrowser found and listed. I didn't select these, the program found them. I have a few were the field played at the one level, like in 1D, with grand slam laydown. I didn't show those, because they were not among the first ones found. Now those REALLY look good. Instead, I went with them in order as found. That seemed the best way not to PICK "examples that look great.

Heavy intervention when holding a three suiter is not as much of a problem as when holding a two suiter or a one suiter. So I think I will not worry too much about that.

Are these hands very frequent? Of course not. In fact they are rare. But with the use of 2D as multi, it does free up the 2NT rebid after opening 2C to be something else, and this something else works very well indeed. I have looked now at hundreds of hands (easy to find with database-based bridgebrowser) with this pattern and count, where dealer has this pattern... true these were pulled out of more than 20000 unique hands, but I was only looking at one position (so you sure to get a chance to open 2C). I guess if I wanted too, I could use the bridgebrowser to calculate the actual occurence, but the method is easy to play, easy to remember, and very rewarding when it happens. I will keep it... and I doubt many others will play it, whcih is fine with me.
