Yes, that is what I thought happened.
But how could that have been avoided? What should I have done to make clubs trump AND check for controls? Should I have not shown the heart suit?

You could have bid 5♣ or 6♣ over 4♥ -- GIB would have passed either of those bids. This isn't the best system, but 4NT was explained as keycard for hearts so that couldn't have been right.
