If we play Drury, it feels quite safe to open 1.

If we don't play Drury I think I will do it as well and will bid 2 over 2 from p, obviously this could take us too high if it's a misfit.

Anyway, someone is probably going to bid hearts, so the main danger may be that p doubles 2 from LHO. I will pass any heart bid from p.

Whatever number of diamonds I feel comfortable with. (And no, I don't feel comfortable with 5+).

You'll have to tell me why you think there's something wrong with 1, or at least why another call is on the radar screen.

Even if the opponents bid a lot of hearts, I'm bidding the = # of spades.

I'm opening with 1 and rebidding twice (hopefully) I don't feel strong enough to open 1 and rebidding spade twice.

hmmm... I'm a "always open the 5-card major" freak, but this seems to be one of those rare occasions where I'll open 1 :)

The reason is there's a high likelyhood of it coming back to me in 4, over which I have a really easy 4.

I don't understand.

If you generally open 1M with the 5M-6m hands, you should (by the argument you give) be even more inclined to do so when you have two cards in the other major. They are less likely to bid 4 when you have two of them yourself, and it is less obvious that 4 is right if they do bid 4.

With spades of course we can still bid spades over 4. Then again, 1 makes it more difficult for them to find their hearts fit.

It's simple: do you prefer to be in this situation

pass pass 1 1
pass 4 ??

or this one instead?

pass pass 1 1
pass 4 ??

(Of course, this is only one of the things that can happen.)

Yeah ok. So what you are saying is that with spades you open the minor and with hearts you open 1? That makes sense.

My point is just that if you often open 1 with 56m, then this particular hand, with a doubleton hearts, is not a hand for opening 1m.

I thought there was some merit opening 1S in third seat with so little defense. Thanks for the feedback.

I think that vulnerable with a passed hand partner I'd pass after wereagles's

pass pass 1♦ 1♥
pass 4♥ ??
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

I think 1S has merit fwiw.

Hanp, I work on the assumption that most people who just jump to 4H at some point have 10 trumps. Especially with RHO being a passed hand. So I think we are safe bidding 4S in that auction, which in turn makes opening 1D safe.
